Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island
It’s the middle of the week, so I thought it might be a good time to share another dose of warmth from Florida. This time I am sharing with you photos from a recent trip I took to Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island, both located just outside of Clearwater, Florida. Think warm thoughts, New York!
Caladesi and Honeymoon are located right next to each other, and in fact the only way to get to Caladesi Island is to take a fifteen minute ferry from Honeymoon Island (unless you bring your own boat, of course). In case you ever make it over to this part of the world, the ferry ride costs $14 and runs every hour. The fee to get to Honeymoon Island is only $8 per vehicle (or $4 if you only have one person in the car).
The islands are a nature lovers’ paradise. One interesting aspect to both islands is that they have recently undergone controlled burns, care of the park service, to keep control of the underbrush. The resulting burned palms have a surreal look next to the white, unblemished beaches.
On Honeymoon Island there is an osprey sanctuary. The huge birds fly overhead and briefly block the sun. As I was walking along the trail I briefly felt like a mouse about to be picked up like a snack. I made it out of the forest without incident, and would recommend the short hike to anyone in the area.
Next on my schedule is a trip to Tarpon Springs, along with photos from a recent hike to the Hillsborough River State Park. Wish you all were here in Florida!
